July is here and your first two weeks of suffering with a new commander comes to a close. The building is still standing, there are cars in the parking lot, and each time I come in I see people with smiles. Why? You, the amazing staff, volunteers, and guests that keep everything going; I cannot thank you enough for all you do.
A benefit to my new position is all the advice I have at my disposal. The bad part of that is that so much of it is contradictory. Everything will be considered, this I promise, not all will be considered very long……this I know. One thing I want everyone to remove from their vocabulary, especially if you are on one of the officer boards, is “we can’t do that here.” Any version of that is unacceptable. Unless there is a rule dictating different, if it works somewhere, it may be a good idea here. Remember, if people like Edison, Ford, and Bell listened to that advice like that our world would be drastically different.
Some have asked what my mission is for the next year. First, it is our mission, to do the most good for the greatest number of veterans, current military and future soldiers. That mission never changes. That said let’s talk about 4412 specifically.
For our Post I would like to focus on getting rid of the mortgage. It is now under $100,000. Without that bill over our head we can have the flexibility to do much more. The area where we do our Flag Retirements is in desperate need of modification. At a minimum, a concrete pad and some fire brick around it to dress it up and make the ceremony presentable. More ideas for that are in the investigation phase as we speak. The kitchen will be renovated and upgraded.
Several smaller projects I would like to see happen. We will look into adopting a unit. Adding some ideas to our recruitment drives. Creating a program specifically geared for the kids. Changing the walls a bit to showcase some wonderful memorabilia that currently sits hidden in our back rooms. These are just the ones off the top of my head.
I have a couple of requests now. First, please stop telling me how we will lose members if we do or do not do something. A: most of these ideas are based on SUCCESS of other venues and B: if they leave it will be probably be short because we have one of, if not the best post in the VFW. Actually, I encourage people to visit other venues. Get us their best ideas and let’s add them to ours.
My second request would be to stop telling me how awesome you are. If you are not going to use your gifts and abilities to further the reason the VFW is here, thanks for your patronage but we need to find those that are willing to share those skills. Your mom will pat you on the back and tell you how good you are. I am not equipped for that detail and I will not request anything of anyone other than to be polite. For those that go above and beyond - all the time – my heartfelt thanks and a huge hug. It is not much, I know, but it’s all I have.
May this be my last long message.
Humbly and honorably,
David Bear – Commander Post 4412

Well the 4th of July weekend is almost upon us, and I would like to take the opportunity to remind everyone to have fun and stay safe. If you’re going to drink please have a designated driver to get you home safely. We are having a 4th of July Celebration at 1pm after the Ceremony; we will be having hot dogs and hamburgers. The sides will be a pot luck so please bring something.
One other note I have to add is the Kitchen will stop taking orders at 7:45pm Mon-Sat and 5:45pm on Sunday
With that said, I need to touch a very important rules of the post. There is no drinking out front of the post or on the side between the pavilion and the building. If you want to drink outside it must be in the pavilion. This rule must be strictly adhered to and will be strictly enforced.
Enough with the rules, everyone have a great 4th of July with your families and remember what this day is all about, our independence and the start of our great country.
David “Taz” D’Anunzio
Jr. Vice Commander
