Commander's Message: February 2016

Posted on February 8, 2016 at 2:50 PM Comments comments (0)

Happy February Team,

My apologies for being so scarce in January. I had a hazmat symposium for work and then the VFW convention. One day I will be retired but not for some time.

First thanks to all those helping keep the place looking good. The litter and cigarette butts are getting where they need to be instead of on the sidewalk and grass. Smokers and non-smokers are to be commended. Let's not forget the hard working cleaning crew as well.

Second is something important to us all. I have heard several people speak of the cheap drinks. Please politely correct them and remind them that part of that cost is blood, sweat, and tears of soldiers and their families. The cost in dollars may be small but the price of our products is without a ceiling. By them saying that and us not saying anything diminishes the entire reason VFW's exist.

An addendum to that are those that come in and brag that they could join but do not. They have the choice and I, as we all should, respect that but it is nothing to brag about. Membership is how we stay in business. Many a post has fallen in no large part from lack of membership. We are not the corner pub, we are a VFW canteen and a place of honor. Please be polite but remind them that if they like it here so much and are able to join they should.

Third, the post is becoming much busier. If you have come in on a steak night or fish fry we are standing room only. I am calling for a few more people to volunteer to help a bit. The current volunteers do an awesome job and both canteen and kitchen staff should be proud of the fabulous job they do. That said things would go easier on us all and we could do even more with a few extra hands. Many hands make light work.

Last, elections are coming up soon. For anyone looking to fill a spot please start thinking about having someone nominate you. As for me, if the post will have me I would like to continue with the honor of be your post commander.

With honor,

With the utmost respect and admiration,

Yours in Comradeship,

David Bear

Hello Comrades,

February is here and hopefully some warmer weather.

Over the last six months there have been a lot of changes at the post. I glad to see we have worked out the kinks and we have listened to our members and patrons to make the post better. I personally thank all those involved for their patience and input, and especially our smokers for their corporation in allowing us to find ways to accommodate you and try and make you happy. As always with anything it’s a work in progress, once again thank you for your patience.

With that said I have been honored and humbled to serve as the Jr Vice for the post. I would be honored to be nominated for Jr Vice again next year. I promise to continue to listen to our members and patrons concerns and ideas and act to solve any problems and concerns.

One other note please bring any illness or National Cemetery run to the attention of the Chaplin or the following individuals so we can make the appropriate arrangements.

Commander David Bear 727-359-6137

Commander's Message: December 2015

Hello Team,

Well we had quite a November didn’t we? Kitchen is open, new big screen, Toys for Tots, Thanksgiving, Veterans Day and Veterans Day picnic, but the biggest change is the smoking. That’s what all of the hubbub is about so let’s clear some of it up.

First, there are those that say this was not a membership decision but a decision by a few to affect all. That is almost a true statement. Why? Simply put the member meeting is once a month and lasts about an hour in most cases. This is where the decisions of the Post are made. That adds up to about 12 hours a year. Those that show up to that meeting get to vote. So to put it simply, the member’s that were at the meeting voted to go nonsmoking.

Second, some say that we should have announced the agenda for the meeting ahead of time. As the majority of the business is brought up by members who do not share what they intend to bring up at the meeting there is no way to know what the agenda is. Specifically in reference to this smoking issue, which has been spoken of and we have been preparing for years, was decided to be brought up during the meeting not before.

Additionally to that end a couple of things. One, the meeting floods with people for only that issue, they leave right after that part of it, and nobody sees them until it is brought up again. Two, there is nothing saying that a notice must be given for general business of the Post. As we are not the first to try nonsmoking but the 5th in the district I do not see this as a special issue that warrants any special notice.

Third, this has been a long process. In preparation we enclosed the pavilion, put television there, music, a mini bar, fans for summer, heaters for winter, and have plans for even more. All of this is being done to minimize the effect on those that wish to smoke. I ask you what VFW, what employer, what other club or place of business has done more to accommodate the smoker.

Last and probably the most important of all is that our main building should be open and available to all Veterans. That is why we are here right? A smoker can use our main building and has a nice area to smoke. A person with respiratory issues cannot do the same. Other things happen at our Post than the canteen.

Our immediate Past Commander of VFW Post 4412, Eric Richardson, said he wanted to make sure that if our canteen were closed for any reason that we would be able to function as an effective VFW. A canteen can be shut down by the Department Commander or in our case the County. Like the drink, a VFW is more than a cigarette. If you value Veterans, value all the good we do for them and our communities, I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to widen the scope of those we can serve.

With the utmost respect and admiration,

Yours in Comradeship,

David Bear

Hello,

Our main objective is to encourage everyone to get more involved. For those who are interested, suggestions and or ideas can be made by simply submitting your input directly into the commander's box.

We will be doing a Membership Drive this month, no details as of yet. We information sheets on the table next to the stage. That explain what Poppies are and how it all got started. If you could please leave a donation that would be greatly appreciated. The money goes to a verity of great causes.

Furthermore, we are always looking for new and inventive ways to improve our membership. If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a member, we are more than willing to help in any way we can. Please feel free to let us know. This post is intended for all of us, so let's aim to make this year better than the year before. God bless, and don't forget to remember those who fought for our country and why we are here.

Hello Comrades,

Well November is out the door and December, the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays are approaching fast. I would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays and be safe. A lot has happened in the last month our kitchen is open again and the most talked about change is the post going no smoking. As the Commander has touched on it so would I like to.

The post going no smoking is also a look to the future as much as it is an overall Health Issue as the commander has stated. The vision for the VFW in general going forward is to become more family oriented and bring in our younger Veterans to sustain the VFW and our Post going forward. This means as a Post we must take certain steps to allow all our veterans to enjoy the comradeship which the VFW brings to all our Veterans. A lot of our Veterans getting out now have aliments and injuries to where they cannot be in a smoke filled environment. The posts mission is to serve its Veterans in the best possible way while trying to do the best to accommodate our other patrons that come in to enjoy our Post. I think as a Post we have done a very good job at this. Yes there is some rough edges still but nothing that cannot be worked through.

NFL Ticket is back at the Post come and enjoy a game with us. The Sunday Meat raffle is back also for the football season so come on in and try and win some Meat. Meat raffle starts at 1pm.

There are some events coming up in the near future, as there are too many to list here please see the events page for further information.

IF you want to make a difference then make a House Committee or a General Meeting. This is the best way to contribute to the Post. As always if you have any questions or concerns please come talk to one of us.

Commander's Message: October 2015

Happy October Team,

September came with several events, changes, challenges, and a special farewell. Though I shouldn't be, I am always amazed at just how well Post 4412 comes together to get the job done. To those that do all that hard work to make us look so good, you have my thanks and admiration. To have the patience, skill, and dedication humbles me. To do so and make it look so effortless is simply amazing. My thanks again.

October is now here and fall begins. We still have projects ongoing. At the time of this writing the kitchen is still under renovation. No completion date is yet available. Our GC (general contractor) and others are working diligently to get it up and running as soon as possible. For updates please come to a house committee meeting or keep reading the newsletter. After much consideration, I will be answering very few questions about it outside of those 2 venues. The standard answer will be "it will be done when it is done".

The House Committee has decided to make the third Tuesday of each month an "event planning meeting". So for anyone with ideas, questions, comments, complaints, or concerns about upcoming events that is the day and time to make a showing. Meeting starts at 1800 hours (6 pm) and we will be talking about events as far out as we can plan them. This is a new idea and is a work in progress so do not consider anything "set in stone".

On the business side I need to remind everyone that this is a VFW and as such we as members are responsible for our "guests". Yes, everyone in the building that is not a member is a guest. If they break rules it is our job to politely inform them of the rules and ensure they abide by them. Should the bartender have to inform them of the rules then we are not doing a good job of policing things ourselves. That DOES NOT MEAN to be confrontational or start issues. Just be aware we are not at the corner pub and our guests need to know that before coming in. We are in a place of honor. A place paid for in blood, sweat, and tears of Veterans and their loved ones.

Also, please remember that even our humble post has a chain of command and proper channels. There are people in positions to do jobs and we have great people in them so let them do what they are supposed to do. I know that in the past this has been lenient to say the least and this too is always in motion and changing. However, as we strive to improve and follow a tried, true, and proven framework to continue our success, by not following this chain it confuses things and makes more work for all. Help us to help you more efficiently and effectively.

Last, recently I was asked what my goal is. My goal is simply to ensure the sustainability of this Post. What does that mean? It means that I look for ways to ensure that no matter what happens that VFW Post 4412 will be able to continue. If the building burns down, we lose the ability to provide a canteen or kitchen, tragedy befalls one or more of the officers or other workers in the Post, or any other scenario. This Post is more than any one person, more than any one group. We are the flagship post of the district.........I would like to be the flagship post of the State. Lofty goals to be sure and definitely not an easy road. I have the utmost faith in those that call VFW Post 4412 home that we can reach that goal together, as we always do, as a team.

With the utmost respect and admiration,

Yours in Comradeship,

David Bear
